Second half of Nigeria and England kicks off as both teams look for the breakthrough

From CNN's Ben Church

Nigeria will look for more of the same as the second half gets back underway.

England, meanwhile, can't possibly be as sloppy as it was before the break and will look to finally stamp its authority on the match.

Both teams have 45 minutes left to find the breakthrough before we head into extra-time and, potentially, a penalty shootout.

Being the underdog, Nigeria has plenty of fans inside the Brisbane Stadium as it attempts to upset England.

Huge roars spread around the stands every time the African side looks to take the lead.

There are few louder in the crowd than Alex Delatte. Don’t be fooled by the color scheme, this Frenchman is cheering for Nigeria.

“They played awesome against Australia," he tells CNN, adding that he's confident the team will beat England.

Nigerian fans loudly celebrated the decision to overturn the penalty, while England supporters booed the decision.

England and Nigeria remain 0-0 at half-time

From CNN's George Ramsay

An eventful first half in Brisbane comes to an end, but it remains 0-0 at the break.

Nigeria had a glorious chance to take the lead when Ashleigh Plumptre rattled the crossbar, while England was denied a penalty after a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

Despite the Lionesses entering this game as favorites, it has so far been much closer than many would have expected.

All to play for in the second half.

England is awarded a penalty as Rachel Daly goes down under a challenge from Rasheedat Ajibade in the Nigeria box.

But after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, the decision is overturned and the match resumes. Nigerian fans in the stands are on their feet to cheer that call.

It remains 0-0 in Brisbane.

England is the reigning European champion and one of the hot favorites to win this year's World Cup, but it's looked a little unsteady in the opening 21 minutes.

It's failed to cope with Nigeria's intensity and is lucky to still be level.

The African side, the clear underdog in this fight, looks unfazed and has enjoyed all the chances so far.

Nigeria's Ashleigh Plumptre has already seen a shot crash off the crossbar and England goalkeeper Mary Earps has been very busy.

Is another shock on the cards tonight?

This is the second England game for Joanna and Stanley Taylor, originally from the UK and now Brisbane residents. They’re predicting a 3-0 win for the Lionesses.

There's a packed stadium tonight with plenty of England fans in the crowd below grey skies. Only a smattering of green supporters for Nigeria, but no doubt they'll make their voices heard throughout the match.

Music blares out as the crowds walk down Caxton Street towards Brisbane Stadium for tonight's last-16 tie between England and Nigeria.

It's a damp evening, but that's not ruining the party atmosphere.

A local resident pops out of the doorway of a classic Queenslander house to croon “Nothing too serious” by Icehouse.

Of course, for both England and Nigeria, things are very serious tonight, as one team faces elimination from the 2023 World Cup.

England fans will be breathing a sigh of relief ahead of their team's round-of-16 clash against Nigeria as star midfielder Keira Walsh returns to the starting lineup.

Walsh suffered a knee injury in the group stages against Denmark and missed England's subsequent game against China.

But her absence wasn't as long as initially feared — England soon announced that Walsh hadn't suffered a dreaded anterior cruciate ligament injury — and she's now been cleared to return to action.

Nigeria, meanwhile, has put Barcelona striker Asisat Oshoala on the bench as she continues her return to full fitness.

Here's how the two teams line up in Brisbane.

England starting 11:

Goalkeeper: Mary Earps

Defense: Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright (captain), Jessica Carter

Midfield: Lucy Bronze, Keira Walsh, Lauren James, Georgia Stanway, Rachel Daly

Forwards: Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo
